Shakespeare ART-3 Antenna Radio Tester – ART-3
The Shakespeare ART-3 Antenna Radio Tester is a simple and reliable diagnostic tool designed to help boaters quickly verify the proper operation of marine VHF radios and antenna systems. Ideal for troubleshooting communication issues, this compact tester allows you to confirm that your radio is transmitting power to the antenna without the need for specialized test equipment.
Easy to use, the ART-3 installs in-line between the VHF radio and antenna cable, providing a clear visual indication that RF energy is present when the radio is keyed. This makes it an essential tool for checking antenna connections, coax cables, and radio output before heading out on the water.
Built with durable components and marine-grade construction, the Shakespeare ART-3 is well suited for onboard tool kits, service departments, and marine electronics installers. Its compact size makes it convenient to store and deploy whenever communication reliability is critical.
Key Functional Features
-
Dual-Scale Meter: Measures both the actual power (Watts) leaving your radio and the VSWR (efficiency) of your antenna.
-
No Batteries Required: Operates using the power generated by your radio's transmitter—it's always ready to use.
-
Go/No-Go Testing: Easily identifies if your antenna is reflecting too much power back into the radio (which can damage your electronics).
-
Compact & Rugged: Designed to be kept in a tool kit or "ditch bag" for emergency troubleshooting at sea.
-
Broad Compatibility: Works with any marine VHF radio (handheld or fixed-mount) and any 50-ohm marine antenna.

How to Use the ART-3
-
Connect: Insert the ART-3 between your radio and your antenna using a short coaxial jumper cable (not included).
-
Test Power: Key the mic on high power and read the Watts scale to ensure your 25W radio is actually putting out ~25W.
-
Test Antenna: Check the SWR scale. A reading of 1.5 or lower is excellent. A reading in the red zone (3.0+) indicates a major fault in your cable or antenna.

Pro Tip: To use this device, you will need a PL-259 to PL-259 Jumper Cable (typically 1-3 feet long) to connect the tester to your radio. This is not included in the box.
Do you have the jumper cable needed to connect this to your radio?
If not, I can recommend the correct RG-8X or RG-58 jumper length and type to ensure your test readings are accurate.
The Shakespeare ART-3 Antenna Radio Tester is an essential diagnostic accessory for maintaining reliable marine VHF communication and ensuring your antenna system is functioning properly.
